The Perimenopause Marriage Crisis Nobody Warns Couples About
Maybe it’s the half done washing. Maybe it’s the dishes left on the bench. Maybe it’s the way he chews, or the fact that you have to ask him again. If you’re a woman in your 40s, small things that never used to bother you suddenly feel unbearable, and you’re not imagining it.
We work with couples every day who are moving through this exact season, and one pattern comes up again and again. The man describes his wife as raging, hormonal, a different person. And that label, however well meaning, doesn’t help her. It makes her feel blamed, unseen, and powerless, and it doesn’t solve anything.
Here’s the reframe we want every couple to hear: perimenopause doesn’t create the cracks in a marriage. It reveals the ones that were already there. For years, many women have had the capacity to tolerate, cover up, or push through things that quietly bothered them. As hormones shift, that capacity shrinks. The irritations don’t go away, they just become impossible to ignore.
This hits especially hard for high achieving, hyper independent women, the ones who have spent decades doing everything themselves and never asking for support. Their bodies are now saying no more. What looks like a breakdown is often an invitation, a chance to move from force (exhausting, fear driven, willpower based) into power (vulnerable, worthy, able to ask for what she needs).
For men, this is an invitation too. It’s a chance to step more fully into leadership, presence, and support in ways you may not have needed to before.
Two shifts change everything for couples navigating this season:
1. Trade judgment for curiosity. Instead of “why are you like this,” try “what’s going on for you? Help me understand.”
2. Turn complaints into requests. Instead of “you never support me,” try “I’m at capacity tonight, could you take care of dinner?” Specific, kind requests give your partner something to actually act on. Generalizations only put them on the defensive.
This isn’t her problem or his problem. It’s your problem to navigate together, and it can become one of the most connecting seasons of your marriage if you let it.
